Ecommerce and Accessibility

Ecommerce and Accessibility
Cosmobile develops accessible Ecommerce.
Accessibility in Ecommerce is, today more than ever, a fundamental aspect to guarantee an inclusive shopping experience.
In fact, from 23 June 2025, the Accessibility Act will come into force: all companies will have to comply with accessibility regulations to ensure that their websites are usable by everyone, including users with disabilities, according to the European directive.
An accessible website allows all people, including those with visual, hearing, motor or cognitive disabilities, to browse and complete purchases independently.
Accessible e-commerce: what does it mean?
To make an e-commerce site accessible, it is essential to respect the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) guidelines, which suggest the use of alternative text for images, clear navigation and compatibility with screen readers.
In addition, the colour contrast must be adequate for those with visual impairments, while the controls must be usable even without a mouse, via keyboard or voice assistants.
Another crucial aspect is simplicity of interaction: purchase forms must be clear and well labelled, avoiding complex Captcha for example, which can be an obstacle. Videos must also have subtitles and transcripts for those with hearing problems.
Accessibility of online shops
Investing in accessibility today is not only an ethical and legal obligation, but also a strategic choice.
An accessible e-commerce site reaches a wider audience, improves the user experience and optimises SEO. It also reduces the risk of legal sanctions in many countries where accessibility is already regulated by law.
Accessible e-commerce with Hyvä
Accessibility is one of the strengths of the partnership between Cosmobile and Hyvä – the frontend theme for Magento, created to offer high performance and reduce the complexity of e-commerce.
Thanks to Hyvä, our e-commerce sites take a step forward in terms of accessibility, which is also made possible by accessible copyrights and optimal design and graphics.
Hyvä provides Team Cosmobile with a solid foundation for creating accessible Magento 2 stores thanks to:
- Semantic HTML: a clear structure that is easily understandable for users and assistive technologies
- Keyboard navigation: all interactive elements can be navigated using the keyboard
- Modal windows: modal windows optimised for accessibility, you automatically move within the navigation window when it is opened, and return to the activation element when it is closed
- Accessible colours, fonts and spacing: the Hyvä theme is designed to ensure sufficient contrast, optimal readability and flexibility in customisation, so that content is accessible on any device
- Assistive technologies: maximum compatibility with assistive technologies such as NVDA or VoiceOver.
Ecommerce and UI
Hyvä also pays special attention to the UI (User Interface), to ensure greater accessibility performance. The Hyvä UI Library is a collection of predefined components ready to use and constantly expanding, designed to be fully compatible with Hyvä themes for Magento 2.
This library aims to make development with Hyvä even faster, easier and more optimised, allowing the complete creation of new and accessible Magento 2 stores in a short time. These are pre-built components that work immediately once inserted into the theme, together with the integration with Figma to customise the design of the project to the maximum.
All this translates into multiple advantages such as: saving time and costs, improved development experience, continuous updates, high accessibility.
Accessible Ecommerce today is not just an option, but a necessity for building an inclusive and welcoming digital experience for everyone.
